July is recognized as UV Safety Month, a time to raise awareness about the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and the importance of protecting your skin—especially during the summer months when UV levels are at their highest.
Why UV Protection Matters
UV rays from the sun (and artificial sources like tanning beds) can cause long-term damage to your skin and eyes. Prolonged exposure without protection increases the risk of:
- Skin cancer – including melanoma, the deadliest form
- Premature aging – wrinkles, leathery skin, and age spots
- Eye damage – such as cataracts and vision loss
- Weakened immune response – making your skin more vulnerable to disease
At Pandya Medical Center, we believe that prevention is powerful—and UV protection is one of the easiest and most effective preventive health habits you can adopt.
Tips to Stay Sun-Safe
Protecting yourself doesn’t mean avoiding the outdoors—it means being smart about how and when you’re exposed to the sun. Here’s how you can lower your risk:
- Use Sunscreen Daily
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply it generously to all exposed skin and reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating. - Seek Shade
UV rays are strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM. If possible, stay in shaded areas during these hours—especially during outdoor activities. - Wear Protective Clothing
Long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses offer excellent protection. Look for clothing with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) label. - Be Cautious Around Reflective Surfaces
Water, sand, concrete, and even snow can reflect UV rays, increasing your exposure even when you think you’re protected. - Avoid Tanning Beds
Artificial sources of UV light carry the same risks as the sun. There is no safe way to tan.
When to See a Provider
If you notice new moles, changes in existing spots, or areas of skin that itch, bleed, or don’t heal, it’s important to have them checked. Early detection is key in treating skin cancer effectively.
Stay Safe, Stay Sun Smart
Your skin protects you every day—take a few moments to return the favor. This July, and every month, make UV safety part of your routine.
