Colorectal Cancer Screening Saves Lives: What You Need to Know

Mar 5, 2026

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s an important reminder that prevention and early detection truly save lives.

At Pandya Medical Center, one of the most powerful tools we have in primary care is preventive screening — and colorectal cancer screening is at the top of that list.

Why Colorectal Cancer Screening Matters

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. The encouraging news? It is also one of the most preventable cancers.

Most colorectal cancers begin as small growths called polyps in the colon or rectum. These polyps often cause no symptoms at first. Screening allows us to find and remove them before they ever become cancer.

When detected early, colorectal cancer has a survival rate of over 90%.

When Should You Get Screened?

According to the American Cancer Society, adults at average risk should begin screening at age 45.

You may need to start earlier if you have:

  • A family history of colorectal cancer
  • A personal history of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis)
  • A history of colon polyps
  • Certain genetic conditions

If you’re unsure about your risk level, your primary care provider can help determine the right timing for you.

What Are Your Screening Options?

Many patients delay screening because they assume colonoscopy is the only option. While colonoscopy is considered the gold standard, there are several effective choices:

1. Colonoscopy (Every 10 Years)

  • Done under sedation
  • Allows removal of polyps during the procedure
  • Longest interval between screenings if normal

2. Stool-Based Tests (Every 1–3 Years)

  • Done at home
  • Non-invasive
  • If abnormal, a follow-up colonoscopy is required

We discuss the pros and cons of each option with you so you can choose what feels manageable and appropriate.

Signs & Symptoms to Never Ignore

Even if you’re under 45, contact your provider if you experience:

  • Blood in stool
  • Persistent abdominal pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Changes in bowel habits lasting more than a few weeks
  • Ongoing fatigue

Early evaluation matters.

Common Myths About Colon Cancer Screening

“I feel fine, so I don’t need it.”
Most early colorectal cancers cause no symptoms.

“The prep is worse than the procedure.”
Prep methods have improved significantly over the years.

“No one in my family has it.”
Most people diagnosed do not have a family history.

Screening Is Preventive Care — Not Just a Test

At Pandya Medical Center, our goal is to help you stay healthy — not just treat illness. Preventive screenings are one of the most powerful ways we can do that together.

If you’re 45 or older and haven’t had a colorectal cancer screening, this is your sign to schedule one.

Your future self will thank you.
