Men’s Health Month: Key Health Screenings Every Man Should Prioritize

Jun 5, 2025

June is Men’s Health Month—a time to raise awareness about the importance of preventive care and health screenings for men of all ages. At Pandya Medical Center, we believe that regular check-ups and early detection are essential to maintaining long-term health and well-being. This month, we’re highlighting the key health screenings men should prioritize to stay proactive about their health.

1. Annual Physical Exam

An annual wellness visit is the cornerstone of preventive care. During this visit, your provider will assess your overall health, monitor vital signs, and review lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, and mental well-being. It’s also a chance to discuss any health concerns and create a personalized care plan.

2. Blood Pressure Screening

High blood pressure often has no symptoms but can lead to serious issues such as heart disease and stroke. All men should have their blood pressure checked at least once a year, more often if they have a history of hypertension or cardiovascular risk factors.

3. Cholesterol Test

High cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease. Starting at age 20, men should have their cholesterol levels checked every 4–6 years—or more frequently if they have risk factors like diabetes, obesity, or a family history of heart conditions.

4. Diabetes Screening

Type 2 diabetes is on the rise and often goes undiagnosed until complications occur. Men over age 35, or those who are overweight or have a family history of diabetes, should have their blood glucose levels tested regularly.

5. Colorectal Cancer Screening

Colorectal cancer is highly preventable with routine screening. Men should begin screening at age 45 (or earlier with a family history), using methods like a colonoscopy or stool-based tests. Early detection can be life-saving.

6. Prostate Cancer Screening

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. The decision to screen should be individualized based on age, family history, and personal risk. Talk to your primary care provider at Pandya Medical Center about whether a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test is appropriate for you.

7. Lung Cancer Screening

Men aged 50–80 with a history of heavy smoking may be eligible for annual low-dose CT scans to detect lung cancer early. Screening can reduce mortality rates by catching the disease in its early stages.

8. Mental Health Check-In

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Depression, anxiety, and stress are common but often overlooked in men. Our providers create a safe space for open conversations and can connect you with support and treatment options.
